Maria Hillegas worked as a 911 Operator and ran background checks for the Pennsylvania State Police until resigning to care for her family fulltime. She is passionate about air-scenting search-and-rescue canines and is also a member of a mounted search and rescue team. She resides on a small horse farm in south central Pennsylvania with her family, canine partner Drago, and riding partner Bailey.

Sarah Gavin believes she has left her dark past behind. College diploma in hand, successful in her job, she is now aiming for the FBI Academy. But as a volunteer search and rescue canine handler, ghosts from her past come back to haunt her. In conflict with herself and surrounding events, Sarah must fight to hold on to her sanity.

Now that her children have grown and moved on from the farm, Fern has become lonely and blue. She watches the other animals as they go about their daily chores.
