Writers’ Meditation – “You’re Not Alone in the Creative Struggle”

It is a pleasure to join you on your writing journey, sitting alongside you, whispering words which are of great power to you.

Breathe in… breathe out.

Sometimes it may feel as if you are all alone in your writing struggles. After all, no one else can write the words you were meant to share. But the desire to communicate, the urge to connect with other human beings, and the need to share our truth is hard-wired. Universally, all writers have struggled at one point – often many points – to wrestle words into submission.

Breathe in… breathe out.

As you sit with your paper or your computer, staring at a blank page, it can feel daunting, as if there are no words to wrap around the meaning you want to share. As if the first sentence, the first phrase, the first word… all words have abandoned you.

Breathe in… breathe out.

The feeling of isolation, of disconnection, of powerlessness surrounds you. The air feels harsh in your lungs. The room narrows and darkens into a black tunnel. You wonder if you were fooling yourself when you first believed you could write.

Breathe in… breathe out.

As time passes in front of that blank page, you wonder if you’ll ever be able to write again. You begin to question every decision you’ve ever made.

Breathe in… breathe out.

In that moment, when all seems darkest, you remember this is a universal struggle. All writers have faced this wall. You reach out tentatively at first, and place a single word on your page. Without judging that word, you add another to it. And another. You finish that first sentence. Maybe all it says is, “I can do this.”

Breathe in… breathe out.

Grounded in this moment, feel your mind lighten. Feel the need to write “important thoughts” drift away. Allow yourself to simply write the words that are on your lips.

Breathe in… breathe out.

First you must write the words that are close, the ones that come easily, the ones which allow you to write others words. Without self-doubt, without judgment, permit those simple words to flow to your page.

Breathe in… breathe out.

Feel the creative spirit of all writers, from all times, seated around you. As your pen moves across the page, as your fingers type rhythmically, filling the page with words… you draw energy and hope from those other creative spirits.

Breathe in… breathe out.

Now, with far less effort than you have believed possible, your writing begins to flow. Words fill your pages, page after page, and you happily anticipate the rest of your writing session.

Breathe in… breathe out…

With each hearing of these words, you breathe out more resistance, and the ease with which you sit down to write will increase.

Breathe in… breathe out…

Your words have power. It is time to share those truths, even when you don’t feel capable, especially when you don’t feel capable. The struggle is universal, and others need your light to find the way out of their tunnels. As you write for the next few minutes, open your mind and your heart to allow that creativity to flow.

This is your time…

and this is your story…

Write with joy!
